About the Project

A mother and her doctor with her newborn
During our field immersion trips in August 2014, a common theme we noticed in both our locations were the high number of cesarean sections and associated referrals that occur. One method of reducing the incidence of cesarean sections is to improve the management of the second stage of labor and to improve the appropriate use of assisted vaginal deliveries, however we observed that this was not happening in low to middle income country settings.

For our subsequent field visits we plan to look more in depth into how midwives and skilled birth attendants manage labor and see how we can bridge the gaps in training for labor management to help healthcare workers feel more confident and become more successful in managing labor.
